One of the many great qualities about bream - and there are many - is their willingness to embrace urban development. In all of our big cities around Australia, bream (of varying species) can be found in the adjacent waterways, and to clued in local anglers they make excellent sport. Urban bream are great for anyone wanting to scratch the itch with a quick session near home, and gearing up for it is as simple as it gets.
Urban breamers have success from boats, kayaks and on foot, and access for any of these is usually available in abundance. Man-made structures such as retaining walls, bridges, pontoons, jetties and boat moorings are all great pieces of cover for bream, and most waterways within larger cities have these things in good supply. Cities such as Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin all have viable bream fisheries - some secret, some not-so-secret!
To get set-up to target these city-slickers, a light spin outfit is going to be your best weapon. The Shimano Symetre Fishing Rod & Reel Combo is a great allround starter for this type of fishing, whether fishing with bait or lures. If wanting to be a little more technical, the Daiwa TD Hyper Fishing Rod 661LFS or Atomic Arrowz Spin Rod AAS-270BC are well-designed bream sticks that allow you to comfortably utilise a range of techniques. A Shimano FL Stradic or Daiwa TD Black LT Spin Reel will make a good pairing for either of these reels.
Light braid in the 2-6lb range or even straight fluorocarbon from 2-4lb is all you need to wrangle even the largest bream - although there could be some losses from extra large specimens!
Those who have to scramble along the bank are well catered for still. Having a range of tackle on hand even when on foot is going to ensure you’re ready for a range of situations. The Rapala Hip Jungle Pack or Countdown Hip Pack are two land-based storage options that will comfortably carry all the gear you need for this caper.
If you want to make the most of your time in the city, especially when fancier targets further afield aren’t available to you, make sure you’re geared up for a city breaming session. It’s a great way to satisfy the urge to fish we all have, and it may teach you a thing or two while you’re at it!
